What kind of English do you speak?

Your Linguistic Profile:

60% General American English

20% Yankee

15% Upper Midwestern

0% Dixie

0% Midwestern

I guess that makes sense. Though I'm not sure where the extra 5% went...

I spent 18 years in NYC and the next 20 year in the Rocky Mountain states and Seattle. Those who notice my accent usually think I'm from Boston. Unless I start talking about accents or I am really tired. Or I've had a few drinks. Then I actually start talking like a normal person (those most people oddly say that's a NY accent (what do they know?)).

I found this quiz over at The Creative Nerd.

  1. too funny! I was raised in Wisconsin (wis-cahn-sen), and have spent a number of years (2 stints) in Oklahoma.

The Okies called me a Yankee, the Cheeseheads called me a Redneck. I can't win.

Want to hear what a ticked off hick sounds like? Pass me a 5th of tequila...

  3. LOL.
I had private schooling and my English teacher was an American from Ohio. Yet I was brought up in a very British environment. When people hear me speak English they think I'm Canadian!!!
btw, English is my second language - I'm German.

I'm in Canada but originally from England so my accent is somewhat mixed (the English accent comes out with the more I have to drink). I've traveled extensively in the US and when down south it's hard to know what language they're speaking!

    Cheers!

    Great one Mel!
I'm from Minnesota but lived in wiscahnsen for three years. Still a Vikes fan even though they suck. Upper Midwest is different from Midwest? Is that the Fargo dialect?

  8. I was born and raised in Nebraska and while I don't consider myself as having an accent, native Southerners here in Tennessee are quick to point out that I must be from "One of those Northern states"... Note, that any state outside of Tennessee seems to be one of those Northern states. LOL

  10. Well I'm from England so I thought it would be a laugh to take this "American English" quiz.

To be honest I left a couple of the questions blank because none of the options fitted.

    Anyway my results are:

    35% General American English

    25% Yankee

    15% Dixie

    5% Midwestern

    0% Upper Midwestern

25% Yankee and 15% Dixie? mmm Interesting ...

    :-)

    Cheers
