Pandemic II

Deadly world wide diseases are rarely fun. Then again, they are rarely Flash games.

I know this game has been bouncing around the internet for a while, but somehow I've missed it (probably too busy looking at LOL cats).

In Pandemic II, you are a disease creator. You start by choosing whether you want to create a virus, bacterium, or parasite. The game chooses the part of the world your disease starts.

As the game progresses, the disease moves from one region to another if you play right. People can get infected at borders, airports, or seaports. As the disease grows, governments begin shutting down points of entry and using other techniques to minimize the spread of the disease.

You gain evolution points through the game that you can spend to improve your disease's infectiousness, lethality, resistance, and visibility.

You want the disease to spread faster than governments can react, infect as many people as possible, and ultimately bring them to death.

The goal of the game is to wipe out the human race.

As you approach the end game, it starts to get a bit disturbing. The game updates pop up with things like, "No signs of life in Peru" or "No one left alive in Canada" and things like that. Sure, it's just a silly Flash game, and worth playing, but it's sobering nonetheless.

Create your own error message

This is a neat site I stumbled across while using Stumble Upon. It lets you create your own Windows error message. You can create your own here. Or, you can see a gallery of others here.

Besides the novelty factor here, I'm pretty sure some one could use this tool for some nasty practical jokes.

Just one more thing

In my experience when a person doesn't know what to do with himself, he will check his email. So with a blank and troubled mind I strolled into the office of the pension, and stood in line waiting for the one super-slow email connection.
I wonder how much more I could get done if it wasn't for One More Thing.

I encounter an inordinate number of time sucks throughout my day.  Things like:
  • Checking my email
  • Checking my Sitemeter stats
  • Checking the Seattle PI and Seattle Times homepage
  • Check for updates on Fark
  • Clearing that shelf
  • Refilling my coffee
  • Charging my iPod
  • Filing my email
  • Deleting my email
  • Sorting my attachments

Each of these activities may only take a few seconds.  I can do them while I'm waiting on hold, or while I'm waiting for Windows to do something.  Or for a computer to reboot.  Or in between big projects.  The do a great job of filling those small gaps.

The problem is that anyone of these tasks can lead me astray.  What starts out as a 30 second task can easily turn into a 5 minute or 10 minute task.  And when I factor in a bunch of them, it adds up.

The result?  Well, I have about 20 "project" blog posts I haven't had time to write because all these little things during the day interfere.

I'm beginning to think that trying to make the best use of those stray minutes throughout the day is actually counter productive.

Online Kaleidoscope

This is a pretty cool Kaleidoscope maker. Draw in the big box and watch your creation in the little box. It's surprisingly fascinating.

I stumbled across this link using StumpleUpon. You can find my other Stumbles here.

Momentum Missile Mayhem -- awesome flash game

Continuing in the fine trend of time wasters, Momentum Missile Mayhem is the latest I've found to vie for your precious time. It combines the traditional tower defense game with the concepts behind pool. It's a lot of fun and you can watch the hours drain away.

I stumbled across this game on Fazed.net.

Time to kill?

Play Filler. It's a simple and frighteningly addictive web game.

Just use your mouse to inflate balloons while avoiding the bouncing balls. Have are could it be?

The best I've done is level 15.
